Song review: Stronger Than Me, by Amy Winehouse

Song review: Stronger Than Me, by Amy Winehouse

Stronger Than Me, by Amy Winehouse, has a jazzy tune and unique lyrics that sound like they were written for those in or wanting to be in a Taken In Hand relationship. While it is uncommon to have a song review on this site, this song is worth recognition by the Taken In Hand community. It portrays the frustrations of a woman craving a Taken In Hand style relationship from a man who is unwilling/unable to lead and the disrespect that often results. At one point she asks "Why'd you always put me in control? All I need is for my man to live up to his role." While I realize that not everyone enjoys this style of music, and others may condemn the artist and her lifestyle, I know that many will relate to the lyrics. Give it a listen, and let me know what you think!

Lo

this is such a good question

k.d. lang has a song that always makes me think of Taken In Hand; it's called "Miss Chatelaine," off her "Ingenue" album. It speaks of giving way and becoming what the other needs for you to be... it's very romantic. It's about 'being held captive.' Nice. ;-)

Three Times A Lady

I didn't have a song, so I asked my husband - he said this is the song that reminds him of me... What a wonderful man!

Man's job

Bruce Springsteen, has a great song called "Man's Job". Lovin' you's a man's job. That says it all, at least to me. If only I had known that 20 years ago

Different Era

Although dated by today's standards, the song that I most associate with my wife and our relationship - after we got it straightened out - is The Platters' July 1955 release of *Only You (And You Alone)* - sometimes know as simply *Only You*. A video of The Platters singing the lyrics may be found at:

Under My Thumb by the Rolling Stones

Heh. It's more BDSM than Taken in Hand, and it's certainly not the kind of man I want to be with. But it's still male-led.

"Must be doin' something right" by Billy Currington. The man has this wonderful woman and doesn't know why. He cherishes her. Her behavior is extremely feminine towards him. She also clearly adores him so he "must be doin' something right"-- of course! He's being a man, loving her in a strong and solid way, and letting her be the woman who loves him.

There's another by Blue Rodeo, "If You Were the Woman and I Was the Man"... it's a little different, but it addresses gender roles and it's sung as a duet which makes it all the more beautiful.

TIH Songs

How about "I'll be watching you" by Sting, or "Are you strong enough to be my man" by Sheryl Crowe? Both songs have lyrics that either imply a strong dominant male or a woman in need of one.

Strong Enough

For anyone interested in country music, Travis Tritt wrote a good song in response (it seems) to Sheryl Crow's song called "Strong Enough To Be Your Man".

Lo

What I noticed was...

The delightfully UnP.C. line in the song .. "Are you gay?? .." Other than that, the song was decent, but not great. I do not really care for her music, it's got just a little to much of the "urban" feel for my taste, and as a person herself, I think very little of Amy Winehouse.

I love the chorus to the Nickelback song, "Figured You Out."

"I like your pants around your feet
And I like the dirt that's on your knees
And I like the way you still say please
While you're looking up at me
You're like my favorite damn disease"

Of course I'm not particularly keen on the drug references and some other parts...but it feels so rare to hear a song that resonates and I do really love this one.

Personally, Ive always liked Springsteen's Badlands.

But there's one thing I know for sure girl
I don't give a damn
For the same old played out scenes
I don't give a damn
For just the in betweens
Honey, I want the heart, I want the soul
I want control right now

whereas my good lady has always expressed a liking for
Madonna's "like a prayer"

"I hear your voice, its like an angel sighing
I have no choice, I hear your voice
Feels like flying
I close my eyes, oh God I think Im falling
Out of the sky, I close my eyes
Heaven help me

Very interesting question.
